Create Your Own Health(ier) Shamrock Shake

It’s that time of year when many people start indulging in artificially flavored minty green shakes. You’ve probably guessed we’re talking about - the infamous Shamrock Shake. While it may seem like a fun and festive way to celebrate St. Paddy’s Day, you may not know exactly what you’re drinking. For example, a 22-ounce Shamrock Shake boasts more than 800 calories and is made with more than 30 ingredients. Yes, we said 30. 3-0.

Here’s a sampling of some ingredients:

  • Corn syrup, high fructose corn syrup and corn syrup solids, oh my!
  • Carrageenan—a thickener that's also used in fire fighting foam, shoe polish and personal lubricants
  • Yellow #5—gives food a yellow or green color that's also used in hand sanitizer, nail polish remover and tanning lotions
  • Red #40—a food dye that's also used in tattoo ink
  • Sodium Benzoate—a food additive that's also used in fireworks; may also be linked to hyperactivity

When you make our healthier version, you'll cut out all of those artificial colors and flavors while nourishing your body with real fresh fruits and vegetables. For example, make your shake using Berry Choco-Latte and you'll get 32% of your daily fiber, 140% of your daily vitamin A and a whopping 180% of your daily vitamin K! That's better than finding a four leaf clover.

  1. Blend Frozen Garden Smoothie according to directions on the package.
  2. Once well blended, add vanilla bean ice cream.
  3. Blend for another 15 seconds.

Our wee bit little lassie taste testers described them as “creamy and fantastic!” The ice cream adds a bit of sweetness, makes it creamy and has a hint of vanilla. Sláinte!
